I stopped eating red meat about 20 years ago, and I was barely eating it for a number of years before that. My mom’s mom died young from a heart condition, so many years ago when my mom about red meat’s connection to heart disease she shared that knowledge with me.

My diet is essentially fish, fruit, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains, plus yogurt, tofu, and eggs (about once a week).

When I heard about the Impossible Burger, I wanted to try it. It’s called “Impossible” because its taste, appearance, and consistency are so meat-like. I have had it a few times as well as Beyond Burgers, and a Beyond Sausage.

I liked them all, but other than the sausage, the deliciousness was largely because of the way they were served (with toppings like avocado, onions, tomatoes, and some sort of sauce).

The best example of that was when I got hungry during a three-hour drive and, as I approached a rest area with a Burger King, I remembered they had introduced an Impossible Whopper.

I hadn’t been in a Burger King or McDonald’s in close to 20 years.

The Impossible Whopper tasted just like I recall a Whopper tasting all those years ago—I am sure because of the toppings, especially the sauces.

Recently, one of my go-to health writers, Dr. Mirkin, shared his thoughts on plant-based burgers.

Here are his recommendations (essentially boiling down to the well-known saying, “everything in moderation”)… “Until we know more, I think eating these plant-based meat alternatives is fine, but make them just a small part of your diet that includes a wide variety of vegetables, beans, whole grains, nuts, fruits and other healthful foods.”

Have you tried the plant-based burgers that are showing up all over the place? What do you think? Join the conversation with your comments…

Best regards,

David
