A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about some catchphrases I like. As I said, I don’t use many, but the ones I use I use a lot. That day I wrote about how “This Too Shall Pass” helps me.

Shortly after, a friend sent me this insightful, helpful note:

I wanted to share the catchphrase I’ve been using a lot… “It is what it is.”

I have found this helps me recognize I can’t control everything. As much as I might want to effect change, there are just certain circumstances in which, despite my greatest efforts and best intentions, I have no impact.

For quite some time, I have been frustrated by this as I continued to look for ways to offer my support, share my goals and ideas—whatever the case may be—in a given situation. Recognizing “it is what it is” has offered me comfort, solace, and a certain peacefulness. It doesn’t mean I like it—it just means I can’t beat myself up with frustration for not being able to improve a situation.

It is what it is… not a concession to defeat, but permission to breathe.

I loved reading this note when I first got it, and I loved reading it again just now as I posted it here. I hope it helps you you find contentment.
